Church News December 2024
A Legacy
We are very grateful to a local resident who has left us a legacy in his will earlier this year.
If you are making a will or amending one, do consider helping us keep the doors of the churches open for everyone by leaving them a legacy. We are determined, with your help, to ensure that we look after these ancient buildings and keep them available for weddings, funerals and christenings, as well as regular services. In these days of ever mounting costs, some extra financial help via a legacy would be hugely helpful.
Help during the Interregnum
Following the retirement of our Rector, the PCC will be organising services and will find visiting clergy to celebrate Holy Communion for us.
Other losses!
In the course of the coming year, Christopher Percival and his wife, Sue, are going to move to the west country. Christopher has, not only served on the PCC for many, many years, but has also been our organist for a long time. Sue has helped welcome visitors to our services, week after week and been a leader of the 'catering team'. We will miss them both hugely. We thank them very much for all their contribution to parish life and wish them well in the future.
If you think you can help in any way, do please get in touch with John Carr, church warden.
Remembrance Sunday
As usual, we came together to remember those who lost their lives during the first and second World Wars and subsequently, on the 10th November. We were pleased to welcome a full church including lots of young people belonging to uniformed groups.
Celebrating Harvest
It was good to see all those who came to celebrate the gathering in of the harvest and to remember just how lucky we are to live where we do, where most have enough to eat and where, by and large, we don’t suffer from draught and famine.
Harvest Supper proved popular as ever, celebrated in a traditional Essex barn, with live music and stories of life in Colchester in another age. We were very grateful to Kate Welham who tinkled the ivories for us and Jane Pearson who talked about the life of a GP in Colchester in days gone by. Thank you to everyone who brought wonderful things to eat and to all those who came and made the party a success.
Christingle
We had a very happy time at the Christingle Service. Lots of parents grand parents and children, about 60 in all. Our thanks to the cubs who made the Christingles most beautifully.
Hand Bell Ringing for Christmas
We had lots of 'rooky' hand bell ringers who came together 'to have a go' They were all remarkably good in spite of never having tried before. We are hoping to play at Great Tey's Carol Service if we are good enough!
